Remote sites and standalone facilities, such as an exterior cellular phone tower, water tower, gated parking lot or turnstile, have unique access control needs.

Most are simple rooms or gated areas but with valuable and critical items inside. They are often protected with nothing more than locks and keys, which provides a thin layer of security as keys can be lost, stolen or borrowed. Securing these locations with traditional server-based access control can require hundreds of feet of wire and days of installation time. Contributing to their unique challenges, remote sites can sometimes be located in remote places with extreme conditions that test the limits of equipment.
